case studies

Postponed Groosman Groosman specializes in creating interesting places in the city. We give places that have fallen into disuse an upgrade. This is exactly what we will be doing during the case study. In the workshop we will ask you to think of a place in the city that could use an upgrade. Along with your teammates you will make a plan to enliven the space. This could be a large observation tower but also just a small pavilion. Through sketch drawings and scale models you will present your design to the rest of the group. Van Wijnen During the shortage in housing of the ‘50 and ‘60, a lot of terraced houses were built, because they were easy and cheap to build. This was later repeated when Vinex quarters where built. To meet the current demand for housing Fijn Wonen was developed by Van Wijnen. It is a standardized version of the terraced house where changes can be on the inside. The outside however is still very monotonous. To make the built environment more dynamic and sustainable we want to change this. This could be done by using different facade materials, color and adding for example a roof garden. During the workshop you will take the role of the designer and developer and design a terraced house that is both diverse and can be built with prefab materials. ABT Crossover Architecture – Engineering, theme Value of design “There are some things engineers can't do. For everything else, there's ABT. This year we will be challenging you with a case that combines environmental and social matters. We want to expand on the simple idea that materials obtained from a product at the end of its short cycle can be transformed to material for building which last much longer and, at the same time, use this potential in building components in order to improve and guarantee today's housing demand. To achieve the best result, you have to think out of the box and that is what we do at ABT.’’ Atelier Rijksbouwmeester / Rijksvastgoedbedrijf Atelier Rijksbouwmeester* and the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf** are often involved when state property is transformed for a different function or sold to the private sector. We compile a document with principles and rules for the redesign. During the workshop we will focus on a property in Zwolle. A government property along the Singel will be sold in the coming years as part of the last phase in the redevelopment along the Singel. In order for the building to give a positive influence to its surroundings we, along with the municipality of Zwolle, will draw up a plan for the area and the role of redevelopment in it. We will explain our role in the project, and together with you, make the first design step as input for the project brief. *Atelier Rijksbouwmeester is the state’s architectural firm. **Rijksvastgoedbedrijf is the real estate organisation of the dutch government that manages all state owned property. KOW architecten Circular Climbing Centre During a small lecture we will explain the do’s and don’ts of building with wood, followed by a design challenge. We challenge you to design an international Climbing Centre. The sport will make its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and will feature three disciplines: Speed, Bouldering and Lead. A country without mountains asks for a challenging Climbing Centre to be able to compete on an international level. The stacking of functions is complex due to the different climbing disciplines and supporting program. We challenge you to design a building in wood with a flexible layout, big spans and as much natural daylight as possible. About KOW KOW cares about healthy cities. We are designing our buildings to create pleasant spaces for people. Through research in design and engineering we develop creative and viable solutions, using sustainable and circular materials. Recently we have been innovating by constructing our buildings in wood.
